I believe both Redmi and Redmi Prime have the same Mi7 Beta Rom. Note that this is not the Stable version yet and keep your Backup and Recovery plans for the worst case scenario.

As for the Back Cover, then it is your personal choice based on protection, style and value. I picked a flip cover for my Note 4G which replaces the back cover that was inbuilt into the case and that way the phone did not feel bulky and maintained its sleek style while traveling and rough use.
