Why does reheating one thing in the microwave sometimes make it boiling hot outside and cold inside?

This happens with my leftovers all the time, especially rice and curry. Wondering if it’s my microwave or if I’m just using it completely wrong.

It’s not necessarily the microwave. Some foods heat unevenly, especially dense ones. I usually spread the food out a little, cover it and stir halfway through instead of blasting it continuously.
