The water at home looks clean, but does that always mean it is fine to drink directly?

The water does not have any obvious smell or colour, so I was wondering what people actually check before deciding whether purification is needed.

Clear-looking water does not necessarily mean it is free from dissolved impurities or microorganisms. After taking a sip of it might help you in finding the type which later be replaced with a purifier.
