Does keeping the windows open completely defeat the purpose of an air purifier?

I like keeping my room ventilated, but I also want to use an air purifier. Feels a bit pointless if outside air keeps coming in.

If the outside air is bad, I usually keep them closed while the purifier is running. Otherwise it feels like doing both things at once.
