Do you find using a smartwatch connected to your phone convenient or irritating?

Smartwatches need a phone app for many settings and controls. Do you find this connection useful or does it make things more complicated?

I find it a little irritating. Some controls only work through the phone app, and I don't like having to depend on it so much.
